Foreign Body in the Eye

Eyelashes or particles of dust can easily get into the eye. If your child’s eye seems irritated, but you can’t see anything in it, she may have an eye infection.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the eye
  • Red, watering eye
  • Your child may rub her eye

What can you do?
Wait a few minutes to see if the natural watering of the eye washed the foreign body away. Try to stop your child from rubbing her eye.
Sit your child down, facing the light. Separate the eyelids. Ask her to look right, left, up and down. Make sure to examine the entire eye.
If you can see the foreign body, wash it out using a jug of clean water. Aim for the inner corner so that water will wash over the eye.  Or, use a damp swab or handkerchief to lift it off.
If the object is still red after the object is removed, take her to the hospital.

What is so good about reading to children?

Reading to your child is the single most valuable thing you can do. Why?

  • it gives experience of different types of language, rhythms and sounds
  • research shows that pre-school children who are exposed to plenty of language (books and conversation) tend to do better at school
  • it teaches about many topics which wouldn't come up in conversation
  • it is a wonderful way to bond with your child
  • it is very calming

Warning: Reading should be fun, NOT work. Reading, and education in general, are serious matters, but they are only meant to be serious for teachers and parents. If something isn't fun, children won't do it. And they have brilliant ways of avoiding what they don't want to do. Your job is to make reading fun and easy for your child.

Baby Activists
It is the parent’s job to inculcate good habits in their children. Children pick things up very fast and from an early age they should be told not to throw garbage on the roads and told about various traffic rules etc. The responsibility lies on the parents to bring up children that are good law abiding citizens.

Music lessons
In today’s world of gadgets and video games, children hardly go out for healthy activities. It is up to the parents to make their children go out of the house and indulge in some healthy activities. Music lessons are one way of getting your child off the couch. Too much TV and video games are harmful not only for the eyes, but also the overall health of children.
